Movie Conventions Research: The Glass Onion

Image
Good morning, Bloggers! Today is the last movie research blog. The glass onion.       Although there is a wide variety of camera angles and shots, I found that the most used two in this movie are high and low angles. A low angle is used to make the actor appear powerful or threatening. While a high angle is used to make the actor appear insignificant or vulnerable. However, a few establishing shots are used to show the environment in which the guest is in. The use of diegetic sounds is present when something eerie is about to happen. The sound of the doors shutting and lights flickering. Non-diegetic sounds are the sounds used when someone is running away from another, the dramatic music that follows. The lighting tends to become darker when something is about to happen, while the sun is out, and the lighting improves when a good outcome happens.       The movie had lots of props to add to the storyline. The use of a weapon to protect the guests from the bad guy or using a car to get f

Movie Conventions Research: Maze Runner: The Death Cure

This film features many different elements and conventions that are found in my past research that I plan to use in my opening sequence.        There are a wider variety of camera angles, movements , and shots in this film. Some include wide shot, birds eye view, pan, Dutch angle, three shot, two shot, close up , and establishing shot. There is lots of use of diegetic sounds which are mainly occurring in the background of the scene which can cause some suspense for the viewer. There was a large amount of dramatic music in the intense scenes like when someone was running from a bad t , or an argument was occurring. The lighting changes throughout the film. In the Beginning , the film is brighter and gives a hopeful feeling to the audience. By the end of the film , the lighting fits the mood which is dark and suspenseful .        There are many props like weapons used to protect the boys from the "Cranks." The use of makeup is huge here because the zombie - like creat

Movie Conventions Research: The Silencing

This film featured a wide variety of elements and conventions I had found in my previous research on the thriller genre.      For camera movements, angles, and shots, I identified a wide shot, establishing shot, aerial shot, two-shot, pan, three-shot, tracking, medium close-up, point-of-view shot, eye level shot, over-the-shoulder shot, dutch angle, 360-degree tracking shot, tilt, zoom      For the general elements and conventions of the movie, most of the film takes place in a wide open, desolate urban landscape, and uses lots of diegetic sounds to indicate eerie sounds off in the distance like leaves crunching or whistling to build suspense. It also used the abrupt transition from silence to loud sounds to startle the viewer. Eerie and suspenseful music was also heavily used throughout the entirety of the film.      It employs the use of low-key lighting and dark lighting throughout most of the film in the action-packed scenes.      Props are used to create symbolic items like t

Genre Decision Blog

For our opening sequence and final task, we have decided on the thriller genre. We decided on this because it fits most with our pitch and the vision we have for it. With the thriller genre, we will be able to make use of all the shots and editing that are on theme for the genre, and that we are fond of . We were originally debating a comedy but ultimately ended up going with a thriller to make it something we would be more likely to enjoy making. The sounds in thrillers are something that we are all familiar with and are comfortable working with, whether that be editing them in or finding them on the web.   All four of us are thriller movie fanatics, which was definitely another contributing factor.   We can’t wait to make a thrilling sequence!

Genre Research: Dark Comedy

Image
Camera Angles, Movement, and Shots: Dark Comedy employs the use of various unusual angles to infuse certain comedic or dark elements. The use of low angles is important when establishing characters with dominance or highlighting flaws within an important character. On the contrary, high angles typically show the vulnerability of a character. Though, in Dark Comedies high angles are used to foreground the absurdity in the plotline. Dutch angles can be used to create a disorientating effect on the audience. Oftentimes, this heightens the discomfort in the narrative.  Regarding camera movements, a plethora of action-packed elements are incorporated. Most commonly, tracking shots, unsteady handheld shots, pans, zooming, and boom shots are used. To start, tracking shots are used to follow a character creating a sense of suspense. Unsteady handheld shots are often employed to contribute to the uneasy feeling of a character. Dark comedies utilize pans, more specifically whip pans, to briefly

Genre Research: Romance

Some common MIS-EN-SCENE we noticed were the setting, costumes, lighting, and props.   Setting: The setting can be used to create a romantic atmosphere such as a candlelight dinner, a science beach view, or a city skyline. The setting can also be used to reflect the emotions and personalities of the characters .    Costume: Costumes can be used to convey the character's personality, social, status, and style. In a romance movie, costumes can be used to create a sense of intimacy and connection between the characters. Movies such as these may use a tuxedo and a nice dress for a night out or a casual look for an evening dinner.    Lighting: Lightning can be used to tell the mood of the story such as a candlelight soft lighting or the warm glow of a sunset or sunrise. Lighting can be used to tell the actors' emotions. A bright light may indicate happiness or a dark light may indicate sadness or introspection. Romance movies typically use a brighter light when the charact
